The building itself was designed by the renowned US architect and planner Louis I. Kahn, Professor at Yale University. The development of the building commenced before 1964 but was delayed due to the War of Independence and was finally completed in 1982.

The octagonal building includes exposed grey concrete and blends of marble façade to juxtapose/complement Dhaka’s concrete city jungle. Lalbagh Fort – A Part of Mughal Empire’s History, Located Right in Dhaka

The Lalbagh Fort (also referred to as Fort Aurangabad) is one of the architectural jewels of the Mughal Empire from the 17th century. The ancient landmark was commissioned by Prince Mohammed Azam, son of the then Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The construction of the fort was later handed over to Shaista Khan, the legislative authority of Dhaka for completion.

However, Shaista Khan did not continue the work, because his daughter had suddenly died in the building and Shaista believed that the fort was cursed and abandoned the construction.

Another historic site to tick-off on your list while in Dhaka is Ahsan Manzil, located in Kumartali at the bank of Dhaka’s Buriganga river. Not only is Ahsan Mazil Pone of the most photogenic attractions in Dhaka, it is also one of the most historical places in Dhaka. 

The Ahsan Mazil Palace was built in 1872 is now classified as a national monument of Bangladesh. The site was originally constructed by British company, Martin and Company and was later purchased by Abdul Ghani, the Nawab of Dhaka, in 1830 from a French trading company to use it as a factory. It was damaged by a storm and then rebuilt with major changes and further expansion to the site.

The design of the Ahsan Mazil is symmetrical with European architecture and features. The bring pink presents a stark contrast against the banks of the Buringa River and really brings the architectural elements of the Mughal and European empires together, which is a rare sight to see.
