Uttara is one of the best planned cities and a desirable suburb to live in Dhaka. In Uttara you can find Dhaka flats sales ranging from luxury apartments to standard flats. Uttara hosts some of Dhaka’s top-notch educational and healthcare institutions in Dhaka. There are also many offices, shopping malls and restaurants in the commercial zones. 

Parks and playgrounds are plentiful in region, which is why Uttara is ideal for middle to upper-middle class families who want to be away from the hustle and bustle of other the busier parts of Dhaka city. However, the disadvantage is significant distance away from Dhaka’s other commercial hubs and prominent suburbs like Gulshan and Banani.

Location and Transport

Uttara is on the road to Gazipur and the Uttara Airport Road connects directly to the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, make it convenient to travel to the airport those who travel overseas frequently. In terms of public there are plenty of rickshaw, taxis and CNGs in Uttara, although rickshaws are not allowed on the highways. Ride sharing apps like Uber and Pathao are also popular with youngsters in the region.

There are plenty of bus services in Uttara that connect to the rest of Dhaka city. For example, the bus services provided by Best Satabdi is quite good and travels all the way to New Market. In addition to this, Uttara’s rail and metro stations are commendable. Uttara residents can enjoy using to the Dhaka Airport Railway Station, which connects to the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and many other train stations in Dhaka. In addition, there are three new metro stations being built in Uttara, including: Uttara South, Uttara Center and Uttara Centre and the metro lines will connect all the way to Motijheel to Kamalapur.

Despite the convenient train and bus routes, the main downside of Uttara is long distance to drive to other commercial hubs and suburbs in Dhaka. This can be a particularly inconvenient for those commuting to work in other parts of Dhaka, due to traffic jams on the main roads, which can take a big chunk out of your daily routine.

Although, Uttara is not known for its fine dining or restaurants, it is a popular location for local street food and international fast-food chains like KFC, Coopers and Pizza Hunt. There are also other popular fast-food restaurants in the area like BFC, Kabab Factory and Khan’s Shawarma House for traditional Bangladeshi cuisine. Uttara’s Sector 7 Bridge is also popular for street food with many vendors offering tasty snacks and delicacies.

For shopping, there are plenty of malls on the main roads, including Rajlokkhi Complex, MH Plaza and one of the largest Aarong outlets close to Jashimuddin Road. Uttara is commendable the large number parks and playgrounds located in the region. Most residential sectors include parks and playgrounds. There is also a large lake than spans from sector 5 all the way to sector 11. For the kids, there is even a small amusement park in Uttara called Fantasy Island.

Schools, Hospitals and Religious Centres

One of the main positives of Uttara are the proximity to good schools. Some of Dhaka’s top-notch primary and secondary schools are located in Uttara include Mastermind and South Breeze School, which are a couple of the schools that score top marks in the country. However, the universities  are not as highly regarded as other parts of Dhaka, a couple of notable ones include the Aeronautical Institute of Bangladesh and Asian University.

There are many hospitals and medical facilities located in Uttara as well. The most notable is the public hospital, Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital located in sector 6. Other hospitals in region include Uttara Central Hospital, Regent Hospital and Uttara Maa o Shishu Hospital.

In relation to places of worship, there are many mosques located around Uttara. The most notable mosques in Uttara include the Uttara Central Mosque located in Sector 4 and the Baitun Nur Jame Masjid located in sector 6. There’s also the Jamtola Eidgah on Road 2/B in Sector 4. There is also a relatively large Hindu Temple in Sector 11.

Uttara is ideal for upper-middle class families who want to be located away from busy city life of Dhaka. Although, Uttara doesn’t carry the same brand name appeal like Gulshan or Banani, it does offer many good access to schools and healthcare.
